History: Canon History.

Eddie was born to a poor family in District 3. Which was most families in District 3, really, but Eddie's was poor even in comparison. His father was long gone before Eddie could walk, and when he was still young, his sister died of malnutrition in the over crowded major city of the electronics producing District. This lead his mother to working hard, and leaving Henry in charge of Eddie.

Eddie idolized Henry. And he internalized everything said about himself. The sacrifices Henry was making, watching Eddie instead of learning a skill to score a job nicer than 'factory worker'. Never mind Henry was still too young, and, really, too dumb for anything past factory work. And as soon as Henry was old enough, Eddie was told over and over how noble it was, how Henry sacrificed to get enough tesserea.

He also followed Henry into any trouble her got into. District 3 being a more urban environment, although it didn't have gangs in the sense our world does, did have trouble kids could get into, and an underground market for goods. Henry, and by extension Eddie, ended up in that underground area, passing along whatever they could to get a few extra bucks (and a few extra bites to eat.)

So when he was just 16 (and Henry just barely still 18, of course it would be his last year) and his brother was reaped, Eddie didn't hesitate to volunteer. To pay him back for everything. It wasn't well thought out, really, like the fact he was negating all the sacrificing Henry had made. A point his mother was happy to point out in their last few minutes before he was taken to the Capitol. But you don't really get to think things out in that moment.

Eddie was moderately popular with the Capitol. He was charming, and good looking enough in that scarpy way, funny enough he aced his interviews. He lucked out that none of the Careers that year were particularly appealing to the crowds past their brute strength.

And in the training center, Eddie was a surprise. Whatever he picked up, he seemed to be at least passingly decent at. He scored high, showing off his knife handling and slingshot skills.

In the arena, he kicked ass. He couldn't quite bring himself to kill off the weak, but he managed to get away from everyone long enough to let that moral issue take care of it's self. And once it got too late in the game, he took over, taking out the competition. At least partially in his birthday suit.

The Capitol loved it.

And when he got back, Eddie loved the Capitol. At least for a little bit. He hated what they stood for of course, but the concept that he got a little bit of this privileged, a slice of the good life? Yeah, he was eating that up. Coming home and for once being the hero instead of the fuck up? Eating that up, too.

The first year was great. He was the District's darling and got everything on a silver platter, and a full belly shut up the nagging voice in the back of his head saying all this was wrong. And hey, he could pay Henry back for everything. And then more. And more. It seemed like there was something Henry wanted every time Eddie turned around. Food for friends. Money for loans. At first he was paying back debt they owed, debt Eddie was happily able to pay back. But soon enough Henry was rolling in more luxury then Eddie most days. And pulling Eddie down with him. It was Henry who brought home morphling the first time, and Henry who talked Eddie into just trying it. Just to loosen up.

And then he had to mentor. He tried hard, he was an underdog, so were they, he had a lot of hope. He worked close with them, and tried to ignore that they were both going to die. And when they did he had the morphling to help him deal with it. It kept his smiling, moving easily at the parties, the scruffy charmer with the out there humor the Capitol ate up.

And when the Capitol started to push him into things he didn't want to do, when they threatened his family if he didn't, well, he had morphling then, too.

And now that he's constantly in the city, constantly "on" for the public? Yeah, he's really glad he has morphling now, too.

Presentation: Eddie is a pretty generic looking guy. Good looking enough to catch eyes, but not drop dead gorgeous. He has messy, dark hair and hazel eyes, and a very nice grin. His build is also fairly average, although the morphling is starting to whittle away at him.

He tends to, when he can argue it in with his stylist, have a laid back style, matching his chill persona. He very much, in looks and actions, plays up the idea that he is an outsider happy to be let inside. A little streak of wild and different, but a safe streak of it, who will tell you awesome stories about dangerous things he did while sitting at a Capitol bar drinking with you. He is very friendly in the Capitol, joking around and glad to party, very much what the Capitol expects. Someone watching carefully can see the edges cracking but he keeps it up fairly well.

At home he is street smart, but still follows behind Henry, even though it is now clear he is the smarter and stronger of the two. He takes care of his family, and spreads the wealth where he can.

Motivations: Eddie's child hood was shitty. He was always being "taken care of" but, in reality, was always bending over backwards to make things run smoothly. Humor, and having a smart mouth (especially around people who weren't necessarily so smart) was a way of coping, a way of expressing himself without really expressing himself. He would rather follow Henry down the rabbit hole then tell him the truth: that he was a drug addicted skeeve bag. The truth, as it was, became deeply ingrained in Eddie, till it was subconscious. He knew Henry was a douche bag, but he'd never say it, and if anyone else did, he'd take them out.

Eddie grew up without any self-esteem. It wasn't that he wasn't good at anything, it was in fact the exact opposite. He was pretty good at everything. He just couldn't let himself be. His mother, overprotective due to Eddie and Henry's little sister being killed, drilled into Henry that he needed to protect Eddie, and into Eddie that he needed to be eternally grateful for everything Henry had given up.

And Henry hopped on that train and rode it as far as he could. So Eddie had to never be as good as Henry.

Henry had to give up "everything" for Eddie (even though Henry didn't have much going for him anyway), and Eddie adored him for it. So he cut himself down to lift Henry up. And Henry had no problem reminding him when Eddie himself was getting too high, in a loving older brother way, of course.

Then of course, Henry started helping him get really high, in an entirely different sense. The Morphling showed up, and Eddie crumbled to Henry's brand of peer pressure easily.

Henry wasn't good at a lot, but he was good at manipulating his brother. He knew to give Eddie just enough of the things he needed to keep him hooked. He looked out for him, and trusted him, and backed him up, and generally kept Eddie in his back pocket.

In the Capitol, Eddie always has Henry over his shoulder. The break in contact that might hypothetically be good is undermined by the misery Eddie is finding in the Capitol. The urge towards escapism crushes any urge to better things, because one is an easy fix and the other involves really exploring how ruined and unfixable the world really is.

But the edges are starting to crack.

Thread: Eddie switches journals half way through from the_prisoner

Prose:

He was trying hard to keep his cool.

But dammit, it was hard. His hands shook, and the morphling hadn't calmed them. If anything, it was making it worse.

What the hell was he suppose to do? He had no hope against the heavy weights the arenas encased now. How was he suppose to rate?

"Hey! Nice weather, right?" He said with a grin as he walked in, waving to the familiar faces above him. Some waved back. That was the Capitol for you. Send you off to your death with a cheerful goodbye.

Picking up a sword, he took a deep breath, before going towards the dummy. The shake was still there, but he still did a decent enough job. If his enemies were going to stand still and let him attack them, he'd do just fine.

"So, I won't have to be worrying about the handicap of a high score, huh?" He gave a grin at the laughter above, and another short wave. Then he tried to leisurely stroll out of the room, without looking like he was too desperate to escape. As soon as he was out, he let out a shaky sigh and ran his hands through his hair.

"Son of a bitch."

What is your character scored:

Eddie has no canon powers. He's just quick witted and good at what he does, catches on quickly. Under regular Hunger Games rules, he would score around a 10. In Games rules, he's a 7 or 8.

Additional information:

Past victor: Eddie fought in the 71st Hunger Games. His arena was a huge, abandoned city, clearly once upon a time a train hub, as the cornucopia was at the center of a huge train station, the tracks crossing the city streets everywhere. The city had, at once point, an extensive subway system that Eddie spent most of the early part of the arena in, eating rats he would catch with the slingshot he'd managed to piece together and avoiding the shadowy, human like mutts that would attack anyone they caught and rip them to pieces.

The city was unnerving, always day, with strange drums that played every hour, and trains that moved suddenly, unexpectedly, crashing down street ways and crushing those in their path, along with those inside of them. Sleep was near impossible for any stretch of time. Much of the fluid around was toxic, strange discharge from the trains that would burn, or cause hallucinations, or any other number of unpleasant things.

Although being on the trains was dangerous, they also sometimes had food, water, and sometimes weapons. On the other hand, they also sometimes had toxins, or mutts. Eddie finally had to take a chance on one, driven out of the subways by his thirst, and the knowledge he couldn't just hide in the subways forever. Sure enough, as soon as he had eaten his fill, gotten some water in him, and found a machete neatly laid out, the train started moving. And releasing an acidic gas, similar to the toxin in the 75th arena in the books.

He knew he didn't have much of a chance. So he did what he had to and busted a window to leap out of the moving train, before crawling to safety, his nerves on fire. Stripping off his now nearly useless clothes, he huddled hidden away and passed out from the pain. Luckily for him, most of the toxins clung to the fabric. Unluckily for him he was now in the arena naked.

But with a machete.

Figuring there was no way he'd make it, he decided to go out swinging. And quickly, as there was no way he wanted to go thirsty again. Heading back to the cornucopia, he found the last group of 5 careers (although he didn't know it) and challenged them head on.

And took them all out.

It was part skill, and part luck. By that point, several were injured, and any group cohesion they had had been shot, most of them about ready to turn on each other. So when the battle started, Eddie didn't even have to do all the work, the careers happy to help take each other out. But in about 5 minutes, he was the only one left standing and confused as the announcer declared him the winner.

Past victor AU: Eddie is from District 3. He has a sense of home there, especially in the city, but it is because D3 is where he comes from, not because he bears any real connection to what D3 stands for.

Hunger Games AU and OC: Eddie is not exactly an upstanding citizen. A doppleganger would be a warning (but ha ha backfires on them he already sorta has one and more would just be MORE trouble. BRING IT.)
